With enthusiasm for discovery and efficiency, Phil’s journey to ISG started with becoming an expert in industrial refrigeration and a passionate entrepreneur. Learn more about his journey, as well as a few spots to check out the next time you’re looking for a getaway!

How did you come to work as a refrigeration engineer?

After graduating with an energy engineering degree, I worked in utilities where I was eventually involved in energy consumption analysis and report writing for food processing facilities. Through this, I gained specific knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer related to refrigeration. I found I enjoyed the industry and went to work for a design-build contractor where I learned how to design and build refrigeration systems.

What brought you to ISG?

I spent 18 years working for a design-build contractor before starting my own business, Golden Industrial Refrigeration (GIR). Through running that business for 14 years, I had the opportunity to work on multiple projects with ISG. Our collaboration led to acquisition discussions and the eventual acquisition of GIR by ISG in 2021.

What has been your favorite part about joining ISG?

It gives me and the team from GIR additional growth opportunities. At GIR, I was the only engineer. Now that I’m at ISG, I am amongst a larger group of engineers and project managers who can relate to the issues I deal with on a day-to-day basis. The camaraderie we’ve been able to develop with the larger ISG team has been fantastic.

What is one piece of work-related advice you would give?

I think there are two important pieces. One, leave your ego at the door. There is always more to learn. To do that, you need to remain humble and open to it. Two, listen first, talk second.

How do you spend your free time?

My wife, Rosa, and I love to travel. We generally don’t like going back to the same place every year but have found that southern Spain is really enjoyable so tend to make a trip there once or twice a year. If I had to pick other favorites, I would say the Netherlands due to a bit of Dutch heritage in my lineage, and the Turks and Caicos for the beauty and relaxation it offers.

What would most people find surprising about you?

I just purchased a dragster as a new hobby. I am fixing it up and looking forward to getting it out on a track!
